Generally speaking, for the average two-seater sofa and corner sofa, a 160x230 cm rug is usually the right size and for a three-seater sofa, a 200x290 cm rug is the right size. To determine the exact size of your rug, look at the arrangement of your furniture:

Size of rug by sofa and other furniture entirely on the carpet: you want to place your rug so that it extends to the left, right and behind all the furniture.

For example, if you have your sofa opposite an armchair, measure from the back of the sofa to the back of the armchair. Add 30 cm to this measurement. This is the length of your rug. To determine the width of the rug, measure the width of the largest piece of furniture (often the sofa). Add 30cm to this as well. The result is the width of your rug.

With these width and length measurements, the rug will be big enough to protrude at least 15 cm to the left and right of the sofa and a little behind the furniture.

TIP: You can increase the luxurious effect of a rug by buying a more generous rug that protrudes 30 cm or more.

Size of rug by sofa and other furniture partly on the carpet: you want to place your rug so that it sticks out at least 15 cm to the left and right of your sofa and is 15 cm under the front of all your furniture.

Again, we assume that your sofa is opposite an armchair. Measure from the front of the sofa to the front of the armchair. Add 30 cm. This is the length of the rug. To determine the width of the rug, again start from the largest piece of furniture. In this situation the sofa. Add 30 cm to the width of the sofa.

With these width and length measurements, the rug will be big enough to slide 15cm under the sofa and 15cm under the armchair.

Size of rug next to sofa and other furniture next to the carpet: you want to place your rug so that 5 cm of floor remains visible between the rug and your furniture.

Rugs of the same width: Measure the width of your sofa. This is the width of your rug. The length is determined by measuring the distance between your sofa and the other furniture and subtracting 10 cm. This leaves a gap of 5 cm between the furniture and the rug.

What size rug for a bedroom?
The size of a rug in your bedroom obviously depends entirely on the size of your bed and the way you want to style the rug. Specifically:

Size of rug under bed: make sure the rug sticks out 60 to 70 cm to the left and right of the bed. To do this, add 120 to 140 cm to the width of your bed.

Rugs under your entire bed: You determine the length of the rug by measuring from head to foot and adding 60-70 cm. If you prefer to have a small piece sticking out at the foot end, determine how many centimetres and add those centimetres to the length of your bed.

If you want the rug to go partly under your bed, determine the length by measuring from the bottom of your pillow to the foot end and add 60-70 cm to that length.

Size for rug next to bed: most beds are at least 200cm long. Next to them is a rug or runner that is about 3/4 of the bed length: 120 to 150 cm. A width of 60-70 cm fits.

Size of round rug by bed: you are completely free. The picture above shows a nice playful way to create a large round rug. The diameter is about 2/3 of the length of your bed.

What size rug under a dining table?
Do you want to buy a rug for under your dining table? Whether it's a rectangular rug or a round rug, make sure it's big enough to fit one chair depth behind a pushed-up dining chair, on average 60cm. This prevents chair legs from snagging behind the rug when you pull up your dining chair.

What size rug for your kitchen?
Determine the size of rug you need in your kitchen by measuring the length of the area where you stand and walk when you cook or wash. So basically you're going to measure a runner: a rug that's about twice as long as it is wide. To make a rug look like a runner, divide the length by 2. Then subtract 10 cm. This gives you the width of your rug. It looks best if you can see 10 cm of the floor between the kitchen plinth and the rug or runner.

What size rug in hallway?
A rug in the hallway should not be placed against walls or against hall furniture, but freely in the room. Determine the size of rug you need: measure the width and length of the hallway. Subtract 60 cm from both measurements. When you lay the rug in the hall or corridor, about 30 cm of floor remains visible on each side, between the wall and the runner. This keeps the overall look airy.

What size rug for dressing room?
You can either have a rug or a runner in your changing room. A rug covers a larger part of the room.
Do you want to measure what size rug you need for your changing room? Follow the directions to measure a rug for the hallway. Do you want a runner in your changing room? Then proceed in the same way as for determining which size runner fits in the kitchen.

What size round rug?
Do you want to know what size round rug fits in your living room, bedroom or dining room? Below are guidelines to determine the size of a round rug. We assume a living room situation.

Size of rug with sofa entirely on the round rug: Take the width of the sofa (in other rooms: the largest piece of furniture in the room) as a starting point. Add 30 cm. That's the diameter of the rug you should buy.

Rug size with sofa partly on a round rug: The rule of thumb is that the diameter of a round rug is equal to 2/3 of the largest piece of furniture in the room. So take the width of the sofa as a starting point. This creates a nice relationship between the furniture and the rug.

Size of rug next to sofa next to round rug: in this case you have complete freedom. Go for a round rug that is as big or small as you want.
